NRA Defensive Pistol

The goal of the NRA Defensive Pistol course is to develop a defensive mindset, the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to carry and use a concealed pistol ethically, responsibly, and with confidence. Range shooting includes holstering - timed drills & qualifications. This course is conducted only by NRA Certified Advanced Pistol Instructors. Students will receive NRA Defensive Pistol certification.

Prerequisite: Successful completion of the NRA Basic Pistol Course or NRA CCW Course.

Recommended: Proficient graduates of the NRA Personal Protection Outside The Home.

Throughout the 2 day course we will learn:

  • The importance of carrying and using a pistol responsibly and ethically for personal protection

  • How the NRA Rules for Safe Gun handling are applied to concealed carry

  • Basic principles of concealment

  • Presenting a pistol – reholster

  • Mental awareness

  • Mental Preparation to develop a defensive mindset for carrying and using a pistol for personal protection

  • Techniques for avoiding life-threatening confrontations

  • Explain the psychological and physiological changes that may occur during an attack

  • Flash sight picture

  • Reload under stress

  • Clear common stoppages – immediate action drills

  • Present a pistol from concealment and reholster

  • Cover and concealment

  • Present a pistol from concealment and shoot targets at varying distances

  • Move off the line of attack and shoot

  • Qualify for the NRA Defensive Pistol Certificate

  • Pocket Pistols

What Students Should Bring to Class:

  • Comfortable non-restrictive clothing.

  • No open toe shoes

  • No loose fitting or low cut tops

  • Lunch

  • Note taking materials

  • Handgun - 9mm or .380 recommended minimum

  • Outside the waistband holster w/belt

  • Concealment garment

  • 2 magazine pouches

  • 3 magazines

  • 300 rounds of ammunition

Day One - Classroom lessons, demos & hands-on dry-fire drills.

Day Two - Indoor range - conducting live-fire instruction, defensive pistol drills, shooting qualifications & written exam. Students need a firearm, holster, concealment garment, 2 magazine pouches & 300 rounds of ammo.

Expect the start time for both days to be the start time listed in the class registration.

Location:

Class location will be in Hunt Valley. Range time will be held at the Guntry range in Owings Mills, MD.

Students will receive the NRA Guide: Basics of Personal Protection Outside The Home handbook, take a Basic CCW Student Examination & receive an NRA course completion certificate.
